In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God.
◄ 1 Peter 2 ►New Living Translation
1. " So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech. 2Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, 3now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness.
The context of Hebrews 5:12 gives a warning against drifting away from the truth of the gospel or good news, as taught by the Apostle Paul and the other disciples of Jesus Christ. Although Paul is the purported author of Hebrews, other historians give credit to other contributors that were around at that time. However, the language and tenor of the text seem very much his style of writing.
The writer of this epistle desired to teach the church that was established there, the revelation of Jesus Christ as "High Priest," and all the details that encompass the role that He should now play in the lives of the Believer. The old system of being made righteous through animal sacrifices was being replaced by the sacrificial blood of Jesus Christ. In verse one it says,1. "Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant.…
My life has been blessed with the birth of my second granddaughter. Brianna Marie Ford, born January 23, 2014. She will be four months old this month. Whenever it is time for me to feed her, she gets excited. When she sees the bottle in the warmer or in my hand, she starts twisting and turning her head back and forth. At first she turned it to the side towards my breast thinking she was gonna get some milk from me, lol, not a chance! But when she sees that bottle those legs start flailing around and she starts crying and fretting like I'm starving her, or the world is about to end.
When the nipple hits her mouth, she settles down and is content until every drop is gone. This morning I thought to myself; "That is how the saints should act towards the Word." We should get so excited and desperate to receive it, just like new born babes. We should cry for it, struggle to get it and hold onto it for dear life. We should desire it as Jeremiah said, "More than our necessary food."
The problem in many churches is we have too many "Baby Christians." The write of Hebrews seems a bit frustrated because in verse 12-14 he says,"You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word.[a] You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. 13 For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. 14 Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong. fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God.
He wanted to teach them more advanced revelations concerning Jesus as High Priest, but they had become lazy, hard of hearing and immature. Their zeal for God had waxed cold. And the same can be said of us today. We want church, our worship experience to resemble the world. We want a concert, a lively display of flesh and entertainment. We want things timely and palatable within the context of our own principles and feelings. We don't want the preacher to bring up our sins/ issues, or preach to us about our lifestyles and behaviors.
This lack of growth reminds me of the movie,"Big" staring Tom Hanks and the cartoon character, Baby Huey. Baby Huey, A cartoon and comic book character, circa 1940s to 1970s, when comic books were still about comedy, and briefly reappearing in the mid-1990s, had a peculiar baby-like vocabulary and grammar that included statements like, "I yamn't going to do this any more". Baby Huey had the mentality and grammar of a baby, in the body of a champion sumo wrestler, and was usually accompanied by his diminutive and aptly-named sidekick, "Cousin" Dimwit. There are those in the body of Christ that look like adults, but are like Baby Huey physically, mentally and spiritually. And some are beyond help because they have people in their circles like "Dimwit," who couldn't help nobody!
The writer of Hebrews had to change the discourse of his message to encourage, warn, and give the remedy for the Hebrews stunted growth. Here his words in chapter 6:1-7
Hebrews 6:1-7 New Living Translation (NLT)
6 So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely we don’t need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting from evil deeds[a] and placing our faith in God. 2 You don’t need further instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And so, God willing, we will move forward to further understanding. 4 For it is impossible to bring back to repentance those who were once enlightened—those who have experienced the good things of heaven and shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the power of the age to come— 6 and who then turn away from God. It is impossible to bring such people back to repentance; by rejecting the Son of God, they themselves are nailing him to the cross once again and holding him up to public shame. 7 When the ground soaks up the falling rain and bears a good crop for the farmer, it has God’s blessing.
In the times in which we live, it is important that we exercise our senses by getting into the Word. We need to crave it like my baby girl in her infancy. Then we need to add some substance to our learning. Just like babies have stages of development, when they move from milk to adding cereal to the bottle, then Mama mixes up the cereal and milk in a bowl in which she or dad spoon feeds it to them. When their sensitive stomachs are ready, the peditrician gives the ok for the mom to add juice and water to the menu. After that baby food, junior baby food, and eventually table food or solid food. We all would look pretty ridiculous walking around with a bottle in our mouth 24/7.
Let us walk on to become mature Christians for the sake of our unbelieving neighbors and family members. I hope this illustration hit home today. There's nothing better than a mi d move or illustration to help us to picture what the Word of God is speaking g to His church, the "Body of Christ!"
Have a Blessed Day and enjoy the sunshine; and Don't Forget To Say Your Prayers!"
