I went to my laptop yesterday evening to respond to an email that was sent to me. I needed to print something off and sign it. I also needed to print off my new car insurance ID cards from my insurance company as well as my homeowners documents. I cringe every time some business sends me something that I have to respond to requiring me to docu-sign the note and resend it to the sender. I tend to lose the original document, make more copies that I need, save it to my folders, downloads, document or some other file, God knows where it went. I am still not proficient in learning the nuisances of technology.
Another thing that disturbs me is the myriad of passwords that I have to create and recreate! I blows my mind and it is nearly impossible to remember all those different pass codes. I had a hard time finding the login info to get into my website. I will tell you about that in a minute.
One of the reasons why I decided to retire from teaching is that, I saw the handwriting on the wall. Everything was quickly moving to a cyber-technological system. Attendance was no longer done manually, lesson plans were to be done on the computer and emailed a week in advance to your supervisor, testing was converting from a booklet form to test being formatted on the computer for the children, and the list goes on and on, I was beginning to feel old, left out the loop, and no one bothered to ask me If I was in favor of these changes or not. Before I knew it or could get acclimated to it, the changes were staring me in the face. My younger cohorts came to my rescue though. they had my back. They were particularly helpful when my daughter and husband were ill. they constructed and turned in lessons plans for me numerous of times, and I was certainly grateful for their kindness and concern.
I just could not stand the fact that after 35 years of teaching, that the computer age would trump good old fashion hardworking, intuitive, creative, caring, loving, tolerant, holistic, comprehensive, teaching strategies and service to mankind, its children, families and community. I am not saying that there were not flaws in the old system and teachers that should never have been reprimanded and even replaced. I am just saying that we through the baby out with the bath water, maybe a little too quickly. We have little to no neighborhood schools. and the smallest youngest of our children board busses so early in the morning and they return even later in the evening.
Well, let me get to the point of my message, what's on my mind. I went to turn on my computer last evening and I saw a message saying it was updating Windows 10. It did so without my clicking on the icon inviting it to do so!!!! I had been holding off after numerous reminders and suggestions that I needed to update and use the latest version of Windows. But I kept putting it off. At first my tech support geeks said, I should wait until all the bugs were worked out before I loaded it onto my laptop, so I held off.
However, I did see a note telling me that if I did not respond within a certain time frame, it was going to go into update mode with or without me. LOL. I did not write or note the date, so when I sat down yesterday, the update was being performed automatically. And it took at least a half hour or more before it was complete. I could not interrupt it, turn off my computer, or make any changes. Like it or not, this thing was going to happen!!! I was a little appalled, but I was helpless do do anything about it.
If you are like me, a part of the "Baby Boomer Age," we do not adjust to change well, We tend to like to keep things the way they are. We fear change, especially technology. I still have friends in their 50's, 60's and 70's who are not on Facebook, let alone, Twitter, Periscope, Linked-in, Snap Chat or Instagram. We like our privacy. We don't like change. Some folk still have a flip phone and many of us still keep our landline phone connected. We are SCARED to embrace technology solely.
But as Believers we must be careful of letting stagnation keep us from living in the NOW! Why? Because FAITH IS ALWAYS, NOW!!! When the Bible in the Scripture references God saying, through the prophet Isaiah, that: "Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth," you have to be ready for it to come "Suddenly." We must expect God to move suddenly in our lives. He does not always inform us or prepare us for the "SUDDENLIES" IN OUR LIVES. He does say we must be ready to shift. We must not be afraid. He tells us that it is He who is making the change, and that He is making the way, and that our later state is behind us, and our new day is ahead of us. In fact our later days, shall be better than our former days.
It is God that makes a way out of no way. It is God who straightens the crooked places and smooth out the rough places. It is God who will supply all of our needs, according to His Riches, by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). When God Moves, who can stop Him? HE does not need our permission to do anything. We just have to trust Him and believer that what HE does will always work out for our good. We have the confidence as His children, knowing that HE will with hold no good thing from those who walk upright before Him. We are His children, and HE takes pleasure in blessing us, not harming and hurting us!!!
When the Windows 10 popped up, I saw some new and different icons and opportunities to do even more than I could with the old Windows 7 app. I looked down in the left hand corner, and saw that I now have a sidekick, named, "Cortana," who prompts me to ask her anything, well I guess Cortana is a female, who knows!!!
I must learn to employ and navigate around this new world called, Windows 10. I have to look at it like it's a new adventure. In fact life is an adventure. Everyday that we wake up, we need to ask God, what is on His mind and what adventures does HE have planned for us today. We should never stop learning and discovering the massive universe, and world that God has created.
Well, I did not intend to go on this long, but I hope you get the jist of what I was feeling yesterday, when things just seem to change without my permission. We all need to wake up and smell the coffee. It is a new day. But we do not have to fear it. God has not given us fear, but love power and a sound mind. We must embrace it like we have done to the hundreds of thousands of new inventions from the past. My saying today is: Change Your Mind, Change Your Whole World! God Bless, enjoy this beautiful day.
And: DON'T FORGET TO SAY YOUR PRAYERS!!!
