In (Hebrews 5:12b) the author suggest that those who are on a diet of milk, are doomed to go back to the first principles of the oracles of God; later called, "the elementary principles of Christ" in (Hebrews 6::1-3). But our diet must one day move from milk to solid food/meat. Just as a physical baby needs to graduate from formula to solid foods in order to grow to maturity; so a "babe in Christ" cannot mature unless the diet goes beyond the first principles of the gospel.
Wiersbe gives an example as to what may be the difference. He says: "milk" represents what Jesus did on earth: His birth, life, teachibng, death, burial, and resurrectiobn. "Solid food" refers to what Jesus is now doing in heaven: for example, His pristhood, which is what the author originally wanted to talk about in the text.
If our diet remains milk only, then we will be what (Hebrews 5:13) calls: "unskilled" without experience in the word of God. We will remain "Babes in Christ." Can youn imagine an apprentice never learning to become a "Mastor Mentor" at the occupation he was learning for years and years? The apprentice should have moved from book knowledge and lectures to actual demonstration and application of what he or she had been taught.
What has your diet been lately? Has it been limited to milk? Has it even included milk? Some Christians may not even be getting the "milk " of the word! Are you getting any meat? Studying portions of God's word that challenges your understanding? If you answered in the affirmative, maybe this is not your issue. perhaps you fall into the last category which I will cover the next time. Maybe your problem is that you have: "the inability to discern." I will deal with that in the fourth part of this blog topic called: "Time to Grow Up."
And again as always, my usual sign off: "Don't Forget To Say Your Prayers."
